Former Speaker Anita Among’s X Account Rebranded to Global Africa Brief Linked to Journalist Remmy Bahati

Watchdog Uganda about 2 hours 3 mins read

Kampala — The official X account long associated with former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has been fully rebranded into a pan-African news outlet, with public records and posts connecting the new operation to New York-based Ugandan journalist Remmy Bahati.

The account (user ID 1325766248458809351), created in November 2020 and previously operating under the handle @AnitahAmong, now appears as @GlobalAfricaHQ under the name “Global Africa Brief.” It carries the bio “The Brief Beyond Headlines,” lists a Global location, links to globalafricabrief.com, and retains roughly 614,000 followers. All previous posts from Among’s tenure as Speaker and Bukedea Woman MP have been deleted. The account now publishes news and analysis on African political, economic, and social developments, including stories on cultural restitution, DRC peace talks, the Africa Credit Rating Agency, and regional health issues.

Among has not issued a public statement confirming the transfer, sale, or rebrand. Her account had gone largely silent after she withdrew from the 12th Parliament speakership race in May 2026 amid ongoing investigations into alleged corruption and unexplained wealth. She later posted in late August thanking President Yoweri Museveni for granting her mercy and confirming she was free from house arrest.

Remmy Bahati, a Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism graduate and former NBS Television reporter now based in the United States, has publicly described herself as a founder building Global Africa Brief. In a September 2026 post, she wrote that as a “journalist and founder” she was proud to engage African leaders “as we continue to build Global Africa Brief and telling a fuller story of Africa’s opportunities.” Bahati has also published multiple articles on the site and tagged or referenced @GlobalAfricaHQ in her posts. She previously worked as a US national correspondent for NBS and has contributed to outlets including Al Jazeera and UN-related publications. She is also known for her work with Diaspora Open Space.

No public document or statement has confirmed a direct commercial transaction between Among and Bahati, nor has either party explained the terms of the account handover. Observers on X noted the abrupt change in early October 2026, with users pointing out that the same long-standing account had switched from political messaging by Among to neutral continental news under the Global Africa Brief branding.

The development effectively removes Among’s most prominent remaining direct public channel at a time when she remains a subject of political and public interest in Uganda. Global Africa Brief’s website presents itself as a platform for breaking news and opinion on African affairs, with no visible ownership or editorial team page identifying Among or listing Bahati as formal publisher.

Watchdog Uganda has not independently confirmed from Among’s known associates and Bahati about whether the account was sold, transferred, or otherwise handed over, and under what terms. The episode highlights how large political social media audiences can be repurposed, while leaving key questions of transparency unanswered.
