‘Gifted artist’ – Barack Obama praises Nigeria’s Njideka Akunyili as they unveil joint portrait

Former United States President, Barack Obama, has unveiled a new portrait created in collaboration with Nigerian-born artist, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, describing it as a reflection of key moments in his personal and political journey.

Obama announced the unveiling via X on Monday, noting that the artwork captures several chapters of his life and that it will be displayed at the “Hope and Change” lobby of the Obama Presidential Center starting this year’s Juneteenth commemorations.

The portrait is expected to be part of a broader exhibition at the center celebrating Obama’s presidency and legacy.

The display also marks a symbolic addition to the institution ahead of its public programming around Juneteenth, a significant date in African American history.

Obama wrote: “It was great joining Njideka Akunyili Crosby — a gifted Nigerian-born, Los Angeles-based artist — to unveil our first portrait together. This piece reflects so many chapters of Michelle and my story, and we’re thrilled that it will be on display in the Hope and Change lobby at the Obama Presidential Center starting this Juneteenth.”
