Governor Sule Launches Distribution Of Fertiliser To Nasarawa Farmers

Channels TV about 2 hours 4 mins read

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has launched the distribution of 20,160 bags of fertiliser to farmers in the state under the Federal Government’s Farm Input Support Programme (FISP).

The event, organised by the Nasarawa State Ministry of Agriculture, took place on Monday as part of phase one of the Renewed Hope Farm Input Programme for the 2026 wet-season farming activities.

Governor Sule said the fertiliser was a gift from President Bola Tinubu to farmers in the state, and not a purchase by the state government as many had assumed.

“In reality, this is a gift from our President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, not from the state government. We want to thank Mr President for this wonderful gesture,” the governor said.

He further explained that the state was used to procuring fertiliser for both wet and dry season farming, which was why many believed the state government was behind the latest distribution.

He clarified that the credit for the 20,160 bags belonged to the President, working through the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.

The governor described agriculture as the backbone of the nation’s economy and the main source of livelihood for millions of Nigerians, noting that his administration would continue to give agriculture top priority because of the huge potential in the sector in Nasarawa State.

“Your presence in our state today is a demonstration of our collective determination to transform agriculture, guarantee food security, create jobs, and improve the livelihood of farmers,” he said.

Governor Sule said the gesture would help cushion the effect of the rising cost of fertiliser, which he said had made it difficult for farmers, including the state government itself, to break even after harvest in recent years.

“Fertiliser has become so expensive that a lot of farmers have found it very difficult to buy. Nasarawa State has about 10,000 hectares of land for our rice farm, and last year, due to the high price of fertiliser, it made it very difficult for us to even break even after our harvest,” he said.

He added that the state government had no plans to retain any part of the consignment for its own farms, insisting that the entire 20,160 bags would go directly to small-scale farmers across the state.

“The entire 20,160 bags are going to you, the farmers, so that you can take them free of charge to do what is right. I don’t believe most of these farmers who received this fertiliser are going to have any losses next year,” the Governor said.

Sule acknowledged the challenges facing the agriculture sector in the state, including banditry, farmer-herder clashes, the high cost of farm inputs and climate variability, but assured that the state government would continue to provide a conducive environment for investment in agriculture, alongside support for security to protect farmers.

He disclosed that the Nasarawa State Government would also commission three major roads in Akwanga on Wednesday, the same day the Federal Government holds a groundbreaking for phase four of Nigeria’s Super Highway project, which will run from Akwanga through Kaduna, Plateau, Bauchi and Gombe states.

He further revealed that Vice President Kashim Shettima would visit Nasarawa State later in the week, on behalf of President Tinubu, to commission the Diamond New Energy lithium processing plant in Endo, Nasarawa Local Government Area, described as the largest of its kind in Nigeria.

Earlier, the Executive Secretary/CEO of the National Agricultural Development Fund, Muhammad Ibrahim, represented by a state official, said the programme was designed to deliver inputs to genuine farmers in partnership with the state government and the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), to boost productivity and household incomes.

The State Chairman of AFAN, Isaac Kigbu, commended the Federal Government and the Nasarawa State government for the intervention, assuring that the inputs would be judiciously distributed to genuine farmers across the state’s 13 local government areas that benefited from the programme.

The Chairman, House Committee on Agriculture, Ibrahim Akwe, also commended the governor’s commitment to the agricultural sector, while calling for more staff and extension workers at the Ministry of Agriculture to train farmers on the proper use of fertiliser and other inputs.
