Group urges due process in investigation of Mary Habila’s death

The Advocacy for the Empowerment of Nigerian Women and Children (AENWC) has called on Nigerians to remain calm and allow security agencies to complete investigations into the death of Miss Mary Habila, urging the public to avoid prejudging the outcome of the probe.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Kaduna and signed by its National Coordinator, Hajiya Salmat A. Abdullahi, the organisation described Habila’s death as tragic and deserving of a thorough, transparent and professional investigation.

AENWC said while citizens have the constitutional right to express their views and assemble peacefully, such rights should be exercised responsibly and without undermining ongoing investigations or public order.

The group stressed that no individual should be condemned based on allegations or unverified claims circulating in the public space or on social media.

It cautioned against calls for sanctions against any individual before investigations are concluded, saying due process should be allowed to take its course.

The organisation also commended the reported decision to involve the police in investigating the incident and urged the Nigeria Police Force to conduct a prompt, impartial and evidence-based investigation.

According to AENWC, investigators should ensure that witnesses are interviewed, forensic procedures are completed where necessary, and all available evidence is objectively examined.

The group further urged relevant authorities to keep the public informed, where legally permissible, to promote transparency and sustain confidence in the investigative process.

It maintained that accountability and due process are complementary principles, adding that the pursuit of justice for Mary Habila should be guided by the rule of law and respect for the constitutional rights of everyone involved.

AENWC also called on government institutions, civil society organisations, faith-based groups, youth organisations, professional bodies and the media to avoid actions or statements capable of prejudicing the investigation.

The organisation expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased and reaffirmed its commitment to advocating stronger protection for women and children, improved access to justice and policies that safeguard vulnerable Nigerians.

It urged security agencies to carry out their constitutional responsibilities without interference and prayed for the peaceful repose of Mary Habila’s soul.
