Lindsey Graham’s sister appointed to complete late senator’s remaining senate term

South Carolina Governor, Henry McMaster has appointed Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, to temporarily fill the U.S. Senate seat left vacant following her brother’s death.

McMaster announced the appointment during a news conference at the South Carolina State House, confirming that Nordone will serve the remainder of Graham’s current term, which expires in January.

According to officials familiar with the process, Nordone is expected to be sworn into office on Wednesday, becoming the first woman in history to represent South Carolina in the United States Senate.

Speaking after her appointment, an emotional Nordone described the opportunity as a profound honour.

“It is such an honor. Lindsey has always been there for me. And now, I will be there for him,” she said.

Surrounded by members of Graham’s staff and longtime political advisers, many visibly emotional, Nordone paid tribute to her late brother, who died unexpectedly on Saturday at the age of 71.

Governor McMaster disclosed that he spoke with Nordone in the early hours following Graham’s death and asked her to take up the temporary appointment.

“I was humbled by your quickness to see the duty that you had to serve,” the governor said.

McMaster also revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump supported the decision after being informed of the appointment, describing it as “a great idea.”

Lindsey Graham, who never married or had children, maintained a close relationship with his sister throughout his political career.

Nordone frequently accompanied him at campaign events, delivered speeches on his behalf, and appeared in several of his political advertisements.

A special election is expected to be held next month to determine the Republican nominee who will contest the seat in the general election and complete Graham’s unexpired term in the reliably Republican state.
