Nasarawa lawmaker raises alarm over killing of 32 persons in constituency

A member of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly representing Udege/Loko Constituency, Hon. Onarigu Onah Kana, has raised the alarm over renewed violence in his constituency, alleging that at least 32 people have been killed in the last three months.

Speaking under a matter of public importance on the floor of the House, Kana said the persistent attacks had left residents living in fear and disrupted farming and other economic activities in several communities.

According to him, the crisis, which began on April 3, 2026, in Odeni Gida Electoral Ward of Nasarawa Local Government Area, has resulted in loss of lives, injuries, displacement of residents and destruction of property.

He alleged that over 200 residents had been displaced from their homes, while houses, vehicles, motorcycles, foodstuffs, farmlands and other valuables worth millions of naira had been destroyed.

Kana also claimed that communities including Angwan Mada, Apura Adagba, Udege Kasa, Akyewa and Angwan Ogiri had been affected by the violence.

“The people can no longer sleep with their two eyes closed. They are afraid to go to their farms, while crops are being destroyed by cattle,” he said.

The lawmaker further alleged that two more persons were killed in Akum Electoral Ward on June 25 and July 9, 2026, warning that the violence could spread to neighbouring communities if urgent action was not taken.

He urged the House to condemn the attacks and call on security agencies to immediately deploy personnel to the affected communities to restore peace and protect lives and property.

Kana also called on the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials, including food, medical supplies and temporary shelter, to displaced victims.

In addition, he urged the House Committee on Security and Special Duties to investigate the remote causes of the crisis and report back to the Assembly.

Responding, Speaker of the House, Dr. Danladi Jatau, described the renewed attacks as unfortunate and called on Governor Abdullahi Sule to direct the Commissioner of Police to deploy more personnel to Udege and other affected communities.

He also urged traditional rulers and community leaders to establish peace and reconciliation committees in their domains to promote peaceful coexistence.

Jatau further appealed to the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to deploy personnel to the affected areas to strengthen security.

The Speaker directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the Assembly’s resolutions to Governor Sule for necessary action.

Several lawmakers, including Hon. Ibrahim Abdullahi Sa’ad, Hon. Esson Mairiga, Hon. Hudu A. Hudu, Hon. Musa Ibrahim Abubakar, Hon. Solomon Yakubu Akwashiki and Hon. Ibrahim Peter Akwe, supported the motion and called for increased deployment of security personnel to communities facing similar security challenges across the state.
