Following widespread destruction caused by severe flash floods in parts of Ebonyi State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has delivered relief materials worth millions of naira to support affected families and alleviate their hardship.
The relief distribution comes in the wake of a devastating flash flood on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, which swept through several communities across Ivo and Ohaozara local government areas.
The disaster submerged extensive tracts of farmland, destroyed residential structures, and displaced dozens of households.
Receiving the federal delegation at the Government House in Abakaliki, the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, expressed concern over the recurring natural disasters in the state while commending the Federal Government’s swift response.
“The incessant cases of flood disasters across our communities remain deeply devastating to our people and local economy,” Governor Nwifuru stated.
“We commend NEMA for its rapid response and intervention to alleviate the plight of our citizens during this critical period.”
The relief package handed over to the state government included essential food items such as bags of rice, beans, and garri, along with cartons of vegetable oil.
Non-food materials including foam mattresses, insecticide-treated mosquito nets, and women’s clothing were also provided to assist families in temporary displacement.
Speaking on behalf of the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, the agency’s Director of Search and Rescue, Air Commodore Bature Usman, emphasised the critical nature of the emergency intervention.
“Our presence here today represents an immediate enforcement intervention structured to bring direct relief to affected households,” Air Commodore Usman noted.
“We have provided a combination of household and non-household essentials to ensure that displaced victims receive immediate life-saving support.”
To ensure equitable access to the donated materials, the Ebonyi State Government reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent and direct distribution process.
Speaking on the state’s distribution strategy, the Commissioner for Human Capital Development and Monitoring, Ann Aligwe, assured that strict oversight would be maintained to prevent diversion.
“The state government will maintain full transparency throughout the distribution exercise,” Aligwe stated.
“We are putting measures in place to ensure that these items reach the genuine victims who have been directly impacted by the disaster.”
The relief delivery comes as emergency conditions worsen in parts of the state.
Early on Wednesday, residents of Amaegbu Akaeze in Ivo Local Government Area faced renewed distress when a fresh surge of flash flooding submerged residential areas, forcing families to flee their homes with young children and salvaged belongings.
State emergency monitoring teams remain deployed across vulnerable locations to assess the rising water levels.
