Newly commissioned Osun flyover suffers damage after heavy rainfall

A section of the newly commissioned LAMECO flyover in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, has sustained damage barely three weeks after it was opened to traffic, following prolonged rainfall.

The 672-metre flyover, commissioned by Governor Ademola Adeleke on July 1, 2026, developed a noticeable depression on one section of the carriageway after an overnight downpour that lasted for almost eight hours between Thursday and Friday.

The affected portion of the bridge showed visible cracks and a sunken asphalt surface, prompting motorists and motorcyclists to slow down while navigating the area before traffic authorities restricted access.

Residents and commuters expressed concern over the condition of the bridge, urging the state government to undertake immediate repairs to ensure public safety and prevent further deterioration.

Many motorists were forced to seek alternative routes as the damaged section disrupted the normal flow of traffic within the Osogbo metropolis.

Security personnel from the Osun Amotekun Corps later cordoned off the affected section of the flyover, preventing vehicles and pedestrians from accessing the bridge while officials assessed the extent of the damage.

The incident has however attracted public attention because the flyover was officially inaugurated less than a month ago as part of the state government’s infrastructure development programme.

Reacting to the development, the Accord in Osun alleged that the damage was the result of deliberate sabotage rather than structural failure.

In a statement by its chairman, Victor Akande, the party said it had received what it described as “credible reports of a disturbing pattern of vandalisation targeting public infrastructure delivered by the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke”.

“These acts are not ordinary criminal activities but appear to be part of a calculated attempt by desperate elements in the opposition APC to undermine and discredit the remarkable achievements of the current administration ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.

“Having failed to match the Governor’s impressive record of performance, these elements seem determined to destroy the very projects that are transforming communities across the state in order to create a false impression of government failure,” the statement added.

Condemning the alleged acts of sabotage, the party said public infrastructure belongs to the people of Osun State and called on relevant authorities to investigate the incident, identify those responsible if criminal activity is established, and restore the damaged section of the flyover promptly.
