Nigeria must reform policing, not just create state police – Sam Amadi

Daily Post about 2 hours 1 mins read

Director, Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, Sam Amadi, has called on the Federal Government to reform policing and not just to create state police.

Amadi made this call on Sunday when he appeared as a guest in an interview on Arise Television.

He reiterated the need for greater decentralisation to bring policing closer to the people.

According to him, such could be achieved by restructuring the relationship between state commissioners of police and the Inspector-General of Police.

“We need to reform policing and not just creating state police. Reforming policing means reforming the institution of law enforcement and political management of state power.

“The police crisis is too much politically controlled. We need greater decentralization, which is to have police closer to the people.

“I am neither for nor against state police. The priority should be to properly diagnose the problem and adopt solutions that address it, rather than pursue ideas simply because they seem appealing,” he said.
