Nollywood actress and filmmaker Iyabo Ojo has opened up about marriage, divorce, motherhood and societal judgement, stating that no woman enters marriage with the intention of walking away.
The actress made the revelation while appearing as a guest on The Morayo Show, where she reflected on her personal experiences and the decisions she has made to protect her family’s peace.
According to Iyabo Ojo, women often go into marriage with the hope of building a lasting relationship, but circumstances can sometimes lead to difficult choices.
“I don’t think there is any woman who wants to get married and walk out of that marriage. You went into the marriage in love. You would want to make it work, but not everyone’s destiny is wired in that direction.”
The actress noted that people should be more careful about judging women who leave marriages because outsiders may not always understand what happens behind closed doors.
She added that remaining in an unhealthy marriage should not be the only measure of commitment, stressing that emotional abuse can have serious consequences.
“You are not going to die in a marriage if it’s not working for you. A lot of people say, ‘As long as he is not hurting you.’ Sometimes emotional abuse is worse than physical abuse.”
Iyabo Ojo also spoke about her decision to reduce public confrontations, especially because of her daughter, Priscillia, who is now married.
The actress explained that she chooses to be more careful with her responses because she does not want her daughter’s marriage to be affected by public controversies.
“I have really piped down because of my grandson now. Priscillia is married now. I don’t want in-laws having a different perception because when one wants to fight, it comes with a lot.”
She, however, maintained that she would always speak up when necessary, adding that protecting her family remains her priority.
