NSC Announces $8000 Reward For Each Gold Medalist At 2026 Commonwealth Games

InformationNG 1 day 2 mins read

The National Sports Commission (NSC) says every Nigerian gold medalist at the forthcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Glasgow, Scotland, will be rewarded with a cumulative cash prize of $8000.

In a statement on Friday, the commission said “an instant cash reward of $3000” will be sent to any gold medalist while “separate performance bonuses” of $5000 will later be paid directly into the athlete’s bank account.

Silver medalists will be awarded a cumulative amount of $5000, and bronze medalists will receive $3000.

NSC added that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to host Team Nigeria’s medal winners after the CWG in appreciation of their achievements.

A majority of Team Nigeria athletes heading to the CWG have been based in Aberdeen for preparation ahead of the competition.

NSC said the athletes received $150 per day and coaches $200 per day as a camping allowance, adding that the payments have largely been completed, with only a few outstanding cases linked to banking issues that are currently being resolved through the respective national sports federations.

The commission added that athletes will now receive $200 per day, while coaches will receive $250 per day when the CWG commences.

NSC also announced that Team Nigeria athletes will be kitted by Puma, the German sportswear brand, for the GWG.

The 2026 CWG will be held from July 23 to August 2.

Nigeria won 34 medals — 11 gold, 9 silver, 14 bronze — at the 2022 CWG in Birmingham, England.
