Okowa visits EFCC office in Lagos amid ongoing probe

Former Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, on Monday visited the Lagos office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) amid an ongoing investigation into alleged financial misappropriation during his tenure.

Sources within the anti-graft agency said that the visit is connected to an ongoing probe into the former governor’s time in office.

Okowa had previously been arrested by the EFCC in November 2024 over allegations of diverting about N1.3 trillion during his eight-year administration as governor of Delta State.

He was also accused of using public funds to acquire properties in Asaba, the state capital, and Abuja.

Following his earlier arrest, Okowa maintained that all state funds were “judiciously used” during his tenure, insisting that he was not afraid of investigation.

“I am not worried, and I have spoken about it. I am not afraid to be investigated,” he said at the time, while alleging elements of media trial.

He added that his administration acted within available resources to deliver public service, noting, “I may not be a saint, but I know I stepped in there as governor with a full hope and desire to help people.”

Okowa served as Governor of Delta State from 2015 to 2023 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and later emerged as the party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general election alongside Atiku Abubakar.

In April 2025, he defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside his successor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and other political figures in the state.
