Osun Guber: British Embassy, EU step up election engagement

Daily Post about 1 hour 3 mins read

The European Union, EU, Election Observer Mission and a delegation from the British Embassy are set to engage with stakeholders ahead of the August 15 Osun State governorship election, as diplomatic interest in the conduct of the poll continues to grow.

The Austrian Ambassador to Nigeria, Peter Guschelbauer, announced the European Union’s plans during a courtesy visit to Governor Ademola Adeleke at the Government House in Osogbo.

He said the mission would observe the election in line with its commitment to promoting democratic standards and credible electoral processes.

According to the ambassador, the Osun governorship election is significant because it comes ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, making compliance with the country’s electoral laws particularly important. He expressed optimism that the poll would be conducted in a transparent and peaceful manner.

Guschelbauer said, “The European Union remained committed to supporting democratic institutions and encouraged political parties and other stakeholders to conduct their activities within the provisions of the law.”

He noted that peaceful elections were essential for political stability and sustainable development.

Beyond electoral matters, the ambassador highlighted the longstanding relationship between Austria and Osun State, particularly through the internationally recognised Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove.

He said Austria was interested in strengthening cooperation in cultural preservation, tourism and business partnerships with the state.

Responding, Governor Ademola Adeleke welcomed the European Union’s decision to observe the election, describing international election monitoring as an important contribution to transparency and public confidence in the electoral process.

The governor said, “The observer intervention of the European Union will strengthen compliance with democratic practices and the Electoral Act for a free and fair poll.”

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peaceful elections and adherence to democratic principles.

Adeleke also used the occasion to promote investment opportunities in Osun State, saying the government was ready to collaborate with Austria and other international partners in sectors including agriculture, renewable energy, education, technology, mining and vocational development.

He said, “We are ready to work with your country and Austrian businesses in exploring these opportunities for mutual growth and prosperity.”

Separately, the Osun State Government disclosed that a team from the British Embassy is expected in the state this week for pre-election consultations and meetings with key stakeholders ahead of the governorship poll.

The planned diplomatic engagements come as political activities intensify across the state in preparation for the election. The state government said the visits would contribute to wider international observation of the electoral process.
