Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for a thorough investigation into allegations that soldiers invaded students’ hostels at the Osun State University, Osogbo, where students were allegedly assaulted, robbed and female students subjected to sexual abuse.
The development was disclosed in a statement posted on Obi’s official page on July 2, 2026.
According to the statement, Obi expressed concern over reports alleging that soldiers invaded students’ hostels, assaulted students, dispossessed them of their personal belongings and subjected some female students to degrading treatment, including alleged rape.
“I have read with deep concern the troubling reports of soldiers invading students’ hostels at Osun State University, Osogbo, during which students were allegedly assaulted, humiliated, dispossessed of their personal belongings, and female students subjected to degrading treatment, including rape,” he stated.
Obi noted that every Nigerian deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, adding that members of the Armed Forces are recognised for their discipline, courage and sacrifices in defending the country.
“Our Armed Forces are renowned for their courage, discipline, and sacrifice in defending our nation. They are not known for such barbarity against the very citizens they are sworn to protect,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor urged the military high command to carry out what he described as a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation into the allegations and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
He said holding any personnel found culpable accountable would not only provide justice for the alleged victims but also protect the integrity of the Armed Forces and serve as a deterrent against future abuses.
He further stated that respect for human dignity remains essential in building public confidence in national institutions, stressing that abuse of power and impunity should not be tolerated.
