BWEBAJJA — The Uganda Police Force has intensified efforts to strengthen its response to gender-based violence (GBV), with Regional Training Officers from across the country undergoing a specialised three-day course in GBV case management.
The Training of Trainers (ToT) course was officially opened yesterday by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Byabagye Moses, Head of Training under the Human Resource Development Directorate, at the Police Senior Command and Staff College in Bwebajja.
The training is aimed at equipping the Regional Training Officers with knowledge and practical skills to improve the capacity of police officers in their respective regions to effectively handle GBV cases.
Addressing the participants, ACP Byabagye stressed the need for a competent and committed police workforce capable of providing quality and survivor-centred responses to GBV.
“Our response therefore requires not only committed professionals, but also a well-trained workforce that understands the principles and practices of quality, survivor-centred GBV case management,” he said.
He challenged the officers to translate the knowledge acquired during the training into practical improvements within their respective areas of responsibility.
According to ACP Byabagye, the trained officers are expected to conduct quality training for fellow police officers, mentor colleagues, identify gaps in skills and knowledge, and strengthen coordination and referral mechanisms for GBV cases.
The initiative is intended to create a wider pool of police personnel with specialised skills in handling GBV cases, particularly through the Regional Training Officers who will cascade the knowledge to officers in their respective regions.
The three-day training is being supported by UN Women, the European Union (EU), and the Justice, Law and Order Sector (JLOS).
The course comes amid continued efforts by law enforcement and justice sector institutions to improve the handling of GBV cases and ensure that survivors receive appropriate support and protection throughout the case management process.
