Remand order: Release Sowore immediately – SERAP tells Nigerian Govt

Daily Post about 2 hours 1 mins read

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has urged the Federal Government to immediately release the African Action Congress, AAC, presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.

DAILY POST had earlier reported that Justice Mohammed Umar of the Abuja Federal High Court on Monday ordered Sowore’s remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the determination of his application seeking a stay of execution of an earlier order revoking his bail.

Justice Umar also struck out an application seeking his recusal from the case over alleged bias.

Reacting to the development in a statement signed by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP asked the Federal Government to withdraw all criminal defamation and cybercrime charges against Sowore.

According to SERAP, Sowore was being detained solely for peacefully exercising his fundamental rights.

“We are concerned about the escalating crackdown on the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, association and media freedom and the flagrant disregard for the rule of law by Nigerian authorities,” SERAP said.
