Somalia: Gunman Kills Jarriban Police Commissioner

Horn Observer about 1 hour 3 mins read
Local security officials said the commissioner was fatally shot during the evening by a young armed man believed to have ties to a pirate group. According to preliminary information from local authorities, the suspect was reportedly associated with a militia previously accused of participating in an attack on the district prison in Gara'ad, in the Mudug region. Officials have not announced whether the suspect has been arrested, and the investigation remains ongoing. A resident of Puntland told Lamaane News Network that Commissioner Katleye was among a younger generation of police officers who had gained strong public support in Jarriban through his efforts to strengthen local security. "He was respected across the district because he actively confronted illegal weapons and individuals involved in criminal activity," the resident said, requesting anonymity because of concerns about the continuing investigation. A local security official, speaking on condition of attribution because the inquiry is active, confirmed that security personnel have begun searching for the suspect and are gathering evidence from the scene. The official said additional patrols were deployed across Jarriban following the shooting to reassure residents and prevent further security incidents. Witnesses reported that police officers secured roads leading to government offices shortly after the attack. Residents gathered near the district police station and administrative offices as news of the police commissioner's death spread across the town. Commercial activity slowed in parts of Jarriban during the evening as security forces maintained an increased presence. Commissioner Katleye had recently intensified operations targeting the circulation of illegal firearms and suspected pirate groups that have operated in parts of Puntland's coastal areas. Local residents said those efforts had contributed to improving security conditions in Jarriban. His efforts aligned with the Puntland State of Somalia's security agenda under the leadership of Said Abdullahi Deni, focusing on improving public safety, dismantling organized criminal networks, and upholding the rule of law. The killing highlights the security challenges that continue to face parts of the Mudug region despite ongoing policing operations. Security analysts note that attacks against senior police officers can disrupt local law enforcement efforts and affect public confidence in security institutions, particularly in areas where authorities continue to confront armed criminal groups. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the motive, and no individual or group has publicly claimed responsibility for the attack. Officials said further information will be made available as investigators continue their inquiry into the killing of the Jarriban District Police Commissioner.
