When many people picture a farmer in Egypt’s Nile Delta, they may imagine an elderly man working ancestral irrigation channels under the blazing sun. But venture beyond Cairo into Egypt’s newer agricultural projects, and a different picture is emerging: young farmers and agritech entrepreneurs armed with smartphones, sensors, artificial intelligence and drones are redefining what it means to work the land.
For decades, agriculture—the backbone of many economies across Africa and the Arab world—has struggled with an image problem among young people. Farming has often been viewed as labour-intensive, unpredictable and financially unrewarding, encouraging many young people to leave rural communities for opportunities in cities.
This trend has contributed to rural-to-urban migration and, in some communities, weakened the connection between young people and agriculture.
But a new generation of Egyptian innovators is challenging that perception.
Rather than seeing farming as an occupation of the past, they are transforming it into a technology-driven enterprise capable of creating jobs, generating wealth and addressing some of the region’s most pressing challenges.
Egypt is an especially important laboratory for this transformation. With limited arable land, a rapidly growing population and severe pressure on water resources, the country has been forced to find smarter ways of producing more food with fewer resources.
Young Egyptians are increasingly turning to agricultural technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to make every drop of water count.
Using sensors placed in the soil, young agritech entrepreneurs are developing systems that monitor moisture levels and send alerts to farmers through mobile applications, helping them determine when crops actually need water.
The technology can reduce unnecessary irrigation and move farmers away from traditional practices that can result in significant water losses.
Other youth-led ventures are deploying drones fitted with infrared and other imaging technologies to monitor large farms. These systems can help identify pests, crop stress and nutrient deficiencies before they develop into serious problems, allowing farmers to respond faster and more precisely.
“We can no longer afford to guess,” notes Muhammad, a software developer in Cairo whose startup recently partnered with rural farmers. “Our grandparents farmed by looking at the sky. My generation farms by looking at the data. We use 40% less water and get a 30% higher yield.”
The example, reported by DW Africa, illustrates a broader transformation taking place across parts of Africa and the Arab world: technology is increasingly becoming a tool for young people to solve problems that previous generations confronted with limited resources.
For the Afro-Arab Youth Council (AAYC), this transformation speaks directly to the organisation’s youth, peace, unity and development agenda.
The future of Africa–Arab cooperation cannot be built solely around political and diplomatic relationships. It must also be built through practical partnerships among young entrepreneurs, innovators, farmers, scientists and technology developers.
Agriculture offers one of the most promising spaces for that cooperation.
The application of smart irrigation in Egypt, for example, has lessons that could be adapted by young agricultural entrepreneurs confronting drought and water stress in the Sahel, East Africa and other parts of the continent. Similarly, African innovations in climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy and agricultural value addition can offer lessons to communities across the Arab world.
This is where the power of Afro-Arab youth cooperation becomes particularly important.
A young Egyptian software developer should not have to solve Africa and the Arab world’s agricultural challenges alone. Through knowledge exchange, investment, incubation programmes, research partnerships and cross-border entrepreneurship, innovations developed in one country can be adapted to meet challenges in another.
Such collaboration can help turn agriculture into more than food production. It can become a source of employment, entrepreneurship, innovation and regional economic integration.
For Africa and the Arab world, this is increasingly urgent.
Population growth, climate change, water scarcity, food insecurity and youth unemployment are interconnected challenges. They require equally interconnected solutions.
Young people are uniquely positioned to provide those solutions because they are not only consumers of technology but increasingly its creators.
The challenge, therefore, is to give them the necessary opportunities, markets, knowledge, capital and access to decision-makers to turn ideas into viable enterprises.
Governments, development partners, the private sector and youth organisations such as the AAYC have a role to play in creating an enabling environment where young innovators can experiment, scale their businesses and take their solutions across borders.
The goal should not simply be to convince young people to return to farming. It should be to reimagine farming itself.
A young person equipped with a smartphone, agricultural data, modern irrigation technology and access to markets can potentially operate a farm very differently from previous generations.
That transformation also challenges an outdated narrative—that agriculture is where young people end up when they fail to find better opportunities.
The emerging reality is the opposite.
With technology, investment and the right policies, agriculture can become one of the most exciting frontiers for Africa and the Arab world’s young entrepreneurs.
The smart-irrigation technology developed by an Egyptian computer science graduate in Cairo can have relevance far beyond Egypt. Adapted appropriately, the same principle can help a young farmer confronting drought in the Sahel, East Africa or Southern Africa.
That is the promise of an integrated Afro-Arab youth agenda: knowledge crossing borders, technology solving shared challenges, and young people turning common problems into common opportunities.
Agriculture is no longer simply about putting seeds into the soil and waiting for the rain.
In the hands of Africa and the Arab world’s technology-enabled youth, the farm is becoming a laboratory for innovation—and the soil could become one of the region’s most important engines of sustainable development.
