The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has declared Wednesday, July 22, 2026, a national day of prayer in honour of the late former Second Deputy Prime Minister and veteran statesman, Rt. Hon. Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali.
In a circular issued by the UMSC Secretary General, Haji Abbas Ssekyanzi Muluubya, all UMSC structures across the country have been directed to hold special prayers for Gen. Ali on the day of his burial in Adjumani District.
Issued on behalf of the Mufti of Uganda, His Eminence Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the directive instructs all UMSC mosques to conduct Swalatul Janazah (Salatul Ghaa’ib)—the Islamic funeral prayer in absentia—after the appropriate congregational prayers.
“All UMSC mosques throughout the country shall offer Swalatul Janazah (Salatul Ghaa’ib) for the late Right Honourable General Moses Ali after the appropriate congregational prayer, in accordance with Islamic practice,” the circular states.
The council has also directed all UMSC offices, institutions and establishments to suspend normal activities to enable leaders, staff and the Muslim faithful to participate fully in the prayers.
UMSC further urged Muslims who are unable to travel to Adjumani, where Gen. Ali will be laid to rest, to join fellow believers in offering prayers and supplications for the departed leader.
“All Muslims are encouraged to remember the late General Moses Ali in their du’as and to pray that Allah grants him forgiveness, expands and illuminates his grave, and admits him into Jannatul Firdaus,” Haji Ssekyanzi wrote.
The directive follows a series of tributes from Muslim leaders who have hailed Gen. Ali’s enduring contribution to the growth of Islam in Uganda. They credited him for supporting Muslim institutions, playing a pivotal role in the establishment of the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), and serving as one of the founding figures of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council.
Gen. Moses Ali, a former military officer, freedom fighter and long-serving government official, passed away at Nakasero Hospital after a period of illness. He will be laid to rest at his ancestral home in Adjumani District on Wednesday.
