The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, now Yakubu Gowon University, has approved the promotion of 34 academic staff to professorial ranks.

The approval was granted under the leadership of the Council Chairman, Distinguished Senator Dr Olanrewaju Tejuoso.

Seventeen senior academics were promoted to the rank of Professor, while another 17 were elevated to Associate Professor across various disciplines.

A statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Director, Information and University Relations, Dr Habib Yakoob, said the promotions were ratified during the 101st Regular Meeting of the Governing Council held on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026.

The statement said the decision followed the consideration of favourable external assessment reports on the candidates’ scholarly publications.

The promoted academics cut across disciplines including Community Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Engineering, Religious Studies, Guidance and Counselling, Accounting, Library and Information Science, Business Administration and Physics.

Others are Parasitology and Entomology, Physiology, Crop Science, Educational Foundations, and Banking and Finance.

The promotions take effect from October 2025.

Congratulating the newly promoted academics, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, said the elevation reflected their commitment to scholarship and academic excellence.

He assured that the university would continue to strengthen its internal processes to ensure timely consideration of external assessment reports and promotion of deserving academics in line with established guidelines.

“These promotions are not just about attaining a higher rank. They reflect our belief that hard work and dedication should be recognised and rewarded,” Fawehinmi said.

He urged the promoted academics to see their new ranks as a call to greater service to the university, their professions and society.
