The Senior Special Assistant to the Imo State Governor on Electronic and Creative Media, Ambrose Nwaogwugwu, has denied reports attributing a statement on Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, and the forthcoming Osun State governorship election to Governor Hope Uzodimma.
Nwaogwugwu, in a statement issued on Thursday, clarified that the comment was his personal opinion expressed in his capacity as a private citizen and was not made on behalf of the Imo State governor.
He said some bloggers had wrongly attributed the statement to Uzodimma, describing the reports as a misrepresentation of facts.
“My attention has been drawn to a trending misrepresentation of the Peoples Governor of Imo State, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, CON, over a comment being attributed to him regarding the recent remarks made by Mr. David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido,” he said.
According to him, the statement being circulated was authored by him personally while commenting on a topical national issue.
“For the avoidance of doubt, only the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor speaks officially on behalf of the Governor, while the Honourable Commissioner for Information speaks on behalf of the Imo State Government, except where any other media aide has been expressly authorised to do so or where it is clearly stated otherwise,” he stated.
Nwaogwugwu urged media practitioners and bloggers to properly contextualise statements and avoid wrongly attributing personal opinions to public officials.
He noted that the report would have been accurate if it had stated that the comment was made by him as an aide to the governor acting in his personal capacity.
“However, attributing the statement directly to Governor Hope Uzodimma is both misleading and unfortunate,” he said.
He called on media platforms that published the reports to correct the attribution in the interest of fairness, professionalism and responsible journalism.
