ADO-EKITI — Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has said the ongoing governorship election in Ekiti State could mark a historic turning point in the state’s political landscape, citing impressive voter turnout and widespread enthusiasm among the electorate.
Bamidele made the remark on Saturday after casting his vote at Eyelori Compound, Unit 003, Iyin Ekiti.
Speaking with journalists, the Senate Leader said reports from polling units across the state suggested a strong turnout, expressing confidence that his party would meet its target of securing at least 500,000 votes.
“Based on the reports I have received regarding voter turnout this morning, I remain confident that our party will achieve its target of securing a minimum of 500,000 votes,” he said.
“The level of enthusiasm surrounding this election is remarkable. People are coming out in large numbers, eager to participate in the democratic process. I believe this election has the potential to rewrite Ekiti State’s political history.”
Bamidele projected that the election could record one of the highest voter participation rates in the state’s history, irrespective of the total number of registered voters.
“Regardless of the total number of registered voters, we may witness one of the highest percentages of voter participation ever recorded in the state,” he stated.
The Senate Leader noted that Ekiti State currently has about 1.059 million registered voters and that, according to figures recently released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), only slightly more than 30,000 registered voters had yet to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
“This means that more than one million eligible voters have collected their PVCs, and we hope that this level of collection will be reflected in today’s turnout and, ultimately, in the outcome of the election,” he added.
Bamidele said a comprehensive assessment of the electoral process would be made after the conclusion of voting, noting that attention should also be given to the conduct of by-elections for National Assembly and State House of Assembly seats taking place across the country.
He expressed optimism that the election would further strengthen democratic participation and set a new benchmark for voter engagement in Ekiti State.
