Heavy rainfall destroys over 20 homes, farmlands in Plateau community

JOS — Torrential rainfall has destroyed more than 20 houses and farmlands in Darwat-Jol community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, leaving several families displaced.

The heavy downpour, which occurred on Saturday afternoon, triggered severe flooding that swept through parts of the community, causing residents to lose homes, food supplies and other household belongings.

A resident of Riyom, Mr Damba Dang, who confirmed the incident in an interview, described the rainfall as one of the heaviest experienced in the area in recent times.

According to him, the flooding overwhelmed the community’s inadequate drainage system, resulting in the collapse of several buildings, particularly houses constructed with mud and thatch.

“Many houses collapsed under the weight of the water. We lost food items, clothing and other household goods. It was a terrible sight,” Dang said.

He added that some farmlands were also washed away by the flood, compounding the difficulties faced by the predominantly agrarian community.

Residents have appealed to the Plateau State Government, relevant government agencies and humanitarian organisations to provide urgent assistance, including relief materials, to support affected families.
