The newly appointed chief justice, Edi Faal, has outlined an ambitious vision for The Gambia’s judiciary, pledging to protect its independence while pursuing reforms aimed at improving efficiency, professionalism, and public confidence in the country’s justice system.
Speaking shortly after taking the oath of office on Friday at State House, Faal said the judiciary under his leadership would remain firmly guided by the rule of law, insisting that court decisions would never be influenced by politics, public sentiment, or any external pressure.
He stressed that judges have a duty to apply the law fairly, regardless of whether their rulings are welcomed or criticised.
“The law must always be applied impartially, regardless of the popularity or unpopularity of the outcome. As chief justice, I pledge that I will always follow the law and will never be swayed by external influence,” he said.
Faal described an independent judiciary as the cornerstone of every democratic society, noting that public trust in the courts depends on judges deciding cases based solely on legal principles.
Beyond safeguarding judicial independence, he identified faster case disposal and higher professional standards within the courts as immediate priorities. He also urged lawyers to uphold the integrity of the justice system by placing the interests of justice above personal or professional considerations.
The new chief justice expressed his appreciation to President Adama Barrow for the confidence reposed in him and thanked the Judicial Service Commission for overseeing the constitutional appointment process. He said the opportunity allows him to return home and contribute his international legal experience to national service.
Justice Faal also paid tribute to his predecessor, Hassan Jallow, praising his efforts to strengthen judicial independence, improve access to justice, expand alternative dispute resolution, and restore confidence in the courts.
Addressing the swearing-in ceremony, President Adama Barrow described the appointment as the outcome of a deliberate and thorough selection process.
“After a well-thought-through process, I took the decision to appoint Mr Edi Faal as chief Justice on account of his reputable intellectual standing, career, academic and professional qualifications, track record, and character measured by relevant international standards,” the president said.
President Barrow also paid tribute to the outgoing Chief Justice, commending his leadership and contributions to strengthening the judiciary. He said Justice Jallow leaves behind a more efficient judicial system, citing institutional reforms and improvements in case management during his tenure.
