Ballon d’Or 2026: Mendieta names top two players to win award

Daily Post about 2 hours 2 mins read

Former Spain international, Gaizka Mendieta, has named the top two players to claim the prestigious individual award this season.

He said that Argentina captain, Lionel Messi and Spanish youngster, Lamine Yamal are well positioned for the award.

The former midfielder said Messi would secure a record-extending ninth Ballon d’Or if Argentina manages to beat Spain in the final of the 2026 World Cup.

He also highlighted that Yamal remains a formidable candidate for the accolade, should Spain succeed in clinching a second World Cup title.

He told Goal, “The World Cup serves as the pivotal factor for the Ballon d’Or. Just as Harry Kane may have earned it, Lamine Yamal could also achieve this. He has had an outstanding season despite facing injuries and has been crucial for Barcelona.

“He continues to be essential for Spain. If Spain triumphs, we should consider their roster for potential candidates. Mikel Oyarzabal is another exceptional player that has gained recognition. If Argentina prevails, Messi will undoubtedly win it.”

Messi has netted eight goals and provided four assists in the current tournament taking place in North America.

In contrast, Yamal has scored only one goal in seven matches thus far.
